For those of us working Mexico regularly, this is no surprise, but since I have not seen this hit the US News sources yet, thought it might be of interest.

A Danish citizen was kidnapped Wednesday night from Revolution Avenue in the Central part of Tijuana. The male was victim was in the company of a Danish woman and both were on their way to a bar in the main tourist area of Tijuana, confirmed the president of the Committee on Tourism(Cotuco), Alicia Meneses Martínez.

Martínez also said that the incident was reported to the State’s Attorney General’s Office (PGJE).

Investigators reported that the couple was heading to the bar of the hotel where they were staying,“La Nelson”,and they were intercepted by a group of individuals who took the man.

Hours later, an unidentified subject allegedly made a phone call to demand a ransom payment of 10 thousand dollars for the Danes freedom.

In this regard, the Secretary of Tourism of Baja California, Oscar Escobedo Carignan, confirmed that he is aware of the incident but said that, until Thursday evening, no one knew for sure if it was a kidnapping because no ransom had been demanded.

Security Staff appeared before the Anti-kidnapping unit of the PGJE to assist the woman reporting the crime, the official said, describing that because there was no initial demand for payment, the victim was considered "missing."

Given that the victim is a foreign national, the woman was assisted in filing the report number 078, Escobedo Carignan said.

He stressed that despite the incident, Baja California is a safe destination, which has been confirmed by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, Carignan added.

He said that fewer incidents are recorded here than in other foreign cities, also confirmed by authorities.

He stressed that the hotel where the incident occurred is one of the oldest and most traditional in the city, making it a rare occurrence of this nature.

The PGJE did not confirm the fact, under the argument that the head of the investigation, the Attorney General for Organized Crime, Fermín Gómez Gómez, was not in the city.

According to the Civic Association against Impunity, there have been at least 20 kidnappings of foreigners.

The incident occurred while Law Enforcement specialists from Colombia to offer a course Anti-Kidnapping procedures to the the State Ministerial police, and on the eve of the Country’s ambassador, Luis Camilo Osorio, the prosecutor will meet with Chief Justice of Baja California, Rommel Moreno Manjarrez.
