Just like Sweden gave away its Nobel Peace prize to Obama to make a statement, the Italian left tried CIA agents "in absentia" (pretty much symbolically), while the right wing (Berlusconi) had been in on extraordinary renditions all along.
In that case, beside the clear "up yours" to the Bush administration, Europeans are sucking up to the arab world, just like the French did when they, again, symbolically, refused their airspace to us for those raids to Lybia.
They really do love us, but got no oil, you see? Talk about mixed messages...
