Im new to this forum, so once again hello to all, i love this site , learning alot!!
I currently have My Calif. state peace officers issued CCW for 2 Weapons, my Glock 22 and my CZ-83, i also have a current BSIS guard card. back when i worked security in the Sacramento area , approx 15 years ago i took baton and OC class, i still have these permits, i was once told the OC was a lifetime cert. any way, my question is , my dept. yearly block training consists of a pretty intensive firearms, chemical agents and baton refresher, along with a myriad of other subjects. my question is can i get away that alone or do i need a OC and baton permit from BSIS along side my CCW? also im aware that HR bill 218 allows me to carry 50 states as a off-duty PO, but i wonder if it carrys while im employed as a EP agent ? any ideas on that? thanks for any ideas - john

In California all off duty peace officers still have to get the exposed firearms permit. If you are still an active peace officer you don't have to take the course but you still have to apply for the permit. Active duty peace officers don't need a permit for baton or OC.

Now the question is..... does this apply to Correction Officers or Parole Agents since they are considered peace officers only while on duty under Penal Code 830.5 P.C. That is something you will have to ask BSIS.

I asked one of my buddies who is a customs agent. it's the same process for everyone. Go online and start the process. It says 3-4 weeks turn around. Good Luck on that one.......

according to TWICS website, there's a center in Benicia in the bay area that you can go to and apply. as you said 3-4 weeks turn-around and 135 dollars, for a 5 year Cert.

it up to you if you want to wait and line. Make a day out of it, or start the process online. are you trying to work in some type of transportation gig?.

xxl610, when it comes to CA CCW, for each guy who says that something is impossible, you can find one who says he did it.

Best current source of intel, that I suggest you study: http://www.calccw.com/Forums/

And here: http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/ccwissuances2007.pdf,
you'll see that there's actually a few (1479) as of 2007. Contrast this number with San Francisco's (6). Those figures are for counties, however.

My take? I've run into a guy who claimed to have a CCW from San Diego. It seems difficult, but not impossible like SF or even LA.

you have better chances in the riverside, san bernandino, humbolt, contra costa. places not close to la, or orange county. La has not given out a ccw in years and does not plan too.

@xxl610: San Diego is a tough nut to crack (for CCWs) currently, but not impossible. You may need to wait for the Sheriff elections before getting a shall-carry administrator in place. There are a good number of EP gigs that are unarmed, so don't let the lack of a CCW discourage you.
