im curious ,does anyone carry a small collapsible baton while performing there duty's? and if so what you Do like and why. My agency switched from side handles to the monadnock a few years back and i love it. there small , discreet, and effective is used correctly. I recently purchased a smaller version of the asp for EP work and a small belt carrier. A tactical baton class sounds fun.

Well, only active LEOs can carry concealed batons for EP work in CA, so I don't 'cause I'm a lowly civvie. :D
I do hold a BSIS license (to carry an exposed baton) because I unfortunately still work in uniform once in a while, but I frankly don't even carry my PR-24 then.
I must admit to not being a big fan of batons for private security (huge liability, little training - permit for life, less target zones than LE). But that has to do with the jobs I take on too. A LEO working as a bouncer, for example NEEDS a collapsible.

Regardless of the situation I would carry a Rapid containment Baton (RCB) from Peace Keeper Arms. They are made in 3 different lengths. My agency issues them and they are great. Basically an expandable bat with a heavy tip that easily fractures bones if used correctly. On the down side, a co-worker accidentally killed a man with a single strike but it speaks to the weapons effectiveness.
We work with asp batons and they work ok, but not when the attacker have much clothing then its useless. The old ones we had rubber batons with a heavy steel/lead bar inside was great though
I'm active le and never carry a baton while i am doing ep stuff..just my preference. Geo

Im not a fan of carrying alot of extra equipment.. I guess its a thing about the use of force continuim... WAY TO MANY STEPS with all the hardware on your duty belt.

I'm with you, but we're swimming against the current. We can all thank lawyers for the need to carry a truckload of options on the way to deadly force. I've said it elsewhere, in the US we're gearheads, but that continuum can be divided into an infinity of increments... so when will it stop? Patrol officers and uniformed security officers have different mission requirements than us in EP, where avoidance is the name of the game.
Now of course, if you're working an event and need to subdue a really combative subject... But that's an active LEO's prerogative per the BSIS, as we said.

Yeah I understand what you are saying.. My point is that if they cant prove that I have been trained with the items then it works in my behalf... I am low profile on all my work... I dont want to be seen,, at least until its to late for the BG... Anyway... You are right the lawyers have turned the use of force continium into a joke.. so to speak.. we will spend more time training and grasping for hardware and end up getting our asses handed to us on a silver platter if we deviate one iota... Bottom line for me is yes I have had the training on on all the fun toys... But I still dont carry them.. My perogative I guess...

It is illegal for a civilian in Kalifornia to own/use a baton. Licensed guards must be certified and in uniform.
It does rain in California, so a good umbrella might be something good to have in kit.

Interesting that you say that LT as I asked the guy who trained me for my permit(LEO/SWAT) and he told me that you can carry one while in a suit "concealed." That there is not concealed or exposed permit for the baton, it is just a standard baton permit. But if it is used a lawyer can come after you saying it is a concealed weapon without a permit etc.
But I do agree with you guys there really is not reason to carry one doing EP work or anything like that. I would only carry it if it offered me more money on the job, but 99% of the time would not use it.
