I totally agree!!

This site has huge potential... it just needs more members really :(

I belong to other non-security related forums, that have in excess of 100,000 members and you just cant keep track of all of the posts.

I know this site is new, but somehow we need to spread the word!!
I try and promote it through all of our former students.

anyone have any ideas?

There needs to be way way more job postings....The jobs here are good... but that is where it needs to expand. I think it might be wise to be getting some of the new members out in jobs, and create more advocates to the site. When someone has obtained a actual job from this site, that huge. Then that needs to be spread by everyone, like this works. There is so much activity online for BG's and Operators. I have been looking for jobs for years and gotten only a couple hits, and I did what I could with what I got.

For me I could use some solid intel on NYC jobs, or what specifics I need to get the job I want. I send my Resume out for tons of jobs but hear nothing back. I know thats the name of the game, but there has to be a solid industry where a guy can get steady work and know that he will support his family with this line of work. I have been thinking of becoming a paramedic becuase nobody seems to follow through with jobs.

Any suggestions?

Actually, I thought it was a little slow too until Lone Wolf got started: this guy is a job hound!

I've joined another EP forum for the employment ads, and they can go for a month without a new posting so I think we're not doing badly. Is it enough? Never, but besides the fact that there are dedicated sites for ads (why cut and paste all of Craig's List or Yahoo! Hotjobs - we all know to go there), I personally feel that discussion boards postings should probably be about details that we couldn't get on, or passed on, but still want to share. Or for requests for help, as in "we're setting up an operation in such & such area - anybody wants in?".

I wish there was a site specifically addressing employment issues for our industry, but most are set up to promote something else and the stale ads feel like an afterthought. You gotta figure that industry insiders know where it's hot... and keep it for themselves and their friends.

It's only my take, though. This is probably more a question for the owners of this site to answer.

Seems like the general tone of all the boards has changed too, with fewer people posting, fewer serious posts, and more idle chat, just to keep things going. It is probably a reflection of recent changes in the economy and our industry.

I think you're right. Personally I don't like to see idle chat or "PM sent" BS on boards, because we're not alone. A casual reader gets bored to death by that kind of wasted bandwidth.

The thing is, as you said this site is yound and needs participation. You never know how one post can make someone register and want to make a statement in response. And for the lurkers and members as well, nothing is more depressing than "no new posts".
So there's been a lot of "keeping this going" between just a handful of people. I know I've bumped a few threads by posting several times shamelessly in my own topics. Just had more stuff to say and was hoping to find an angle that would cause a response. Felt like talking to myself a lot, but I'm used to that... :D

Hopefully we can get more substance in the future.
The "private lounge" atmosphere is not my thing - I'm after intel.

Now as far as the economy is concerned, since people are less busy than normal, I was really hoping that they'd post more. But maybe they don't have the heart for it, I dunno.

All good points LT. Myself, like a few guys I know who are working, we are busier than ever, but we are doing more BS jobs than ever, just to keep working and hoping to cherry pick some good stuff. I just don't have time for the private lounge conversations, or good posts that devolve into private lounge stuff.

Hey Wolf and Lt,
You guys are the best bloggers...lol. I love reading both of your posts. I hope all are keeping busy as I have been swamped with regular and off duty work. I have not been this busy in Dec ever. In fact usually it gets quiet till Jan. All the best Geo

Hey, thanks a lot, Geo, and glad to see you busy working!
I just picked up an estate protection gig myself on top of my other gig, so I'm gonna have less time to spend here, but I'll still do my best to come and share some bandwidth with all of you guys... :)
Now is usually a plentiful time for everybody in our line of work. I hope the rest of our membership manages as well.

BUMP!

Suggestion to the membership (staff, I hope it's OK):

Post. Tell others (all potential colleagues or employers!) who you are and what you do, or want to do. Comment or question to show your motivation and interest. Stand out.

To the lurkers who just want to read and learn, fine. But to those who register and state wanting in or to get busier... that's not gonna happen if you stay on the sidelines. Don't complain that the biz is slow and unfair while you otherwise remain silent and disengaged.

So please, be a little generous and participate: you must first give to receive, no? Almost anything you share can help someone.

And I sure hope that no one is too intimidated to post, because this has to be one of the most unpretentious boards on the internets! Do some research and go on some where you have to show a police ID or kiss a ring to be allowed in, and where you get slammed with "and who might you be?" if you have anything that looks like a different opinion...

Face it: making the effort to join here (no you don't have to pay for membership, it's voluntary), then interact with others, exchange tips and intel, and eventually hook up and get jobs is an exercise in networking.
When I meet new guys in the field and mention this forum (and others) and see them drag their feet, I know they're just expecting to be handed out a job. Doesn't work that way - the industry is too competitive. You gotta go after leads and put yourself out there. Show people why they should hire you. If you don't have smarts or initiative (forget experience, that can come later), how are you gonna perform on the job?

Look, guys, I'm just another member like you. OK, a serial poster too, maybe... (:D) I do have my PPO but am not yet in a hiring position (I'm looking at you and taking names for future reference, though!). But I did refer another member to my boss once (didn't work out) and just heard from a couple of guys that they had discovered this forum, gotten the EP company list from it, and one will probably land a job out of it soon.
And that's nothing: several members, and not just the sponsors, are company operators (hint).
If you read between the lines (a lot goes on in PMs), you'll also see that people hook up outside for training and referrals.

I'm really getting sick of seeing my own handle at the beginning and end of every thread! lol
Maximum voters in a given poll ever was... 9?! Come on...

Bottom line is: this board is a tool. Use it. Help it. For you. POST! :)

We are trying our best to spread the word, as LT mentioned, we dont allow know it alls or bad attitudes here, there is no reason for it... the site WILL grow and is growing... but if you just stop and only read, you will not get as much out of this FREE site (supporting membership has its benefits too).

Introduce yourself, network, its what this board/site was made for!

Thanks to everyone who has joined and moreso contributed.

Yes, thanks, SCBA Admin, I forgot this part: there's been some amazing contributions on this site and there's a lot of resources in place already (training, legal advice, employment leads, etc.). Thanks all!
