"high-end security company"... "$18-$20 per hour"... (their last ad said $16)
Pretty sure I know who this is. PM me if wondering. It's a job.

Last year I saw an ad specifying military background with "tactical training preferred"... $11/hr. lol

And everybody is high end, of course. No one is a low-balling, bottom-feeding, fly-by-night outfit run out of a P.O. box that only hires "independent contractors"...

At least, the company that placed the above ad is legit, if it doesn't pay top dollar.

I have a feeling that the industry is changing. While there still are big EP outfits with actual suites in office buildings, I see more and more one-man ops too. The way of doing business is being revolutionized by technology: companies are smaller and more mobile, virtual if you will.

Frankly, I like the smaller outfits, as long as they don't play fast and loose with labor laws and BSIS rules, and provided they have enough work.
When I started out, I wanted one employer (I see a lot of newcomers here hope to get the same thing after paying for a training course). Now I'd rather diversify my options and move freely from one employer to another, picking and choosing based on pay and clients. Good companies know that most EP guys operate like that. So to me, small and flexible can work.

I'll admit, when someone wants to interview me at Starbucks instead of their office, I get a little suspicious, but it does happen more and more.

Default something going on here

I believe I interviewed with this company in May. On the phone it was presented one way and during the interview it was presented completely different. Bottom line was it was an onsite executive protection job at a client's house. The shift was 5/8 shifts on graveyard. The money wasnt there for me to make the drive, they did however offer overtime to make up for it. Work more hours a day make more money....just didnt appeal to me. They also wanted a long term committment prior to starting. I asked for more money on the second interview and they never called back.

LT, Funny you should mention that....I had an interview at a StarBucks about 2 months ago....I was really apprehensive about it...Funy thing is She, the interviewer, mix up the dates and didn't show. After a long conversation I came to realize that was a bit fishy since she called to confirm the week before...As for working for other companies....it's up to you. Some companies I've delt with cry conflict of interest.....Some are ok with it. Business is starting to pick up a bit for me. I'm getting calls but then the dreded cancellations...It's is what it is. Brian1944 I've been there and done that I know your pain.....We all have. I just pray that it'll get better soon because I was getting in a funk before I joined this forum and LT kind of help get me out...Venting is good for the soul but Whinning is death....Gentalmen I'm only a call away.

Oh, boy, don't get me started on their "conflicts of interests". lol
Some companies also consider you on call when not working. They expect you to sit by the phone or notify them if you're going to be out-of-town on your days off. My question to one of them was: "Am I being compensated for this?", and when they of course said, "Well, no", I just told them: "I'm not on call then. But please feel free to call me. If available, I'll gladly help you out." That was the end of that!

Unless you put someone on salary, give them management responsibilities, and compensate them accordingly, all this with a contract guaranteeing dates of employment... you can expect them to get side jobs or to look around and can't prevent them to. I hate juggling several gigs (they all call at the same time or not at all), but that's how the biz goes and where money and freedom are. Companies should leave it up to their employees to be professional and not get into scheduling conflicts or keep their mouths shut. If outside employment jeopardizes their job performance, they should be given a choice, otherwise I say it's nobody's business.

Brian1944, what you're saying pretty much confirms what company it is. 8-hour shifts, little OT, low pay, mostly estate stuff... but they're better than anyone else and want a commitment. Of course, the clients don't want their houses to have revolving doors so the company promises them stability. But then they wanna go cheap so how can they expect to retain people? By telling them they're like family?! lol Unless desperate, you made the right call by passing.

I also had a female (the owner's wife) interview me at Starbucks last year, and wonder if it's the same company as you, Dave. Interview went very well, I sent a thank you note... and then I never heard from them again. You gotta take those in stride and move on otherwise it'll suck the life right outta you. It was like that all year in '09.
